A former munitions plant in Lavrio, eastern Attica, where authorities are considering opening a migrant center, falls well below safety standards, the union representing workers at Hellenic Defense Systems (EAS) – which has jurisdiction over the site – warned on Friday.

In a statement, EAS said that there are still large quantities of munitions and toxic chemicals being stored at the facility and that it has not been thoroughly cleaned or secured since its closure five years ago.

“Other than covering basic needs such as providing temporary shelter, food and medical care, reception centers also need to ensure the safety of the refugees as well as the workers,” EAS said.
