The European Parliament has decided to back plans regarding the relocation of 120,000 refugees from Greece, Italy and Hungary, after the EU’s interior ministers failed to reach an agreement.

An emergency vote was held in the European Parliament on Thursday, on whether to support the European Commission’s proposal, with 370 MEPs voting in favor, 134 MEPs voting against and 52 MEPs abstaining from the vote. Additionally 372 MEPs approved a legislative resolution, while 124 voted against and 54 abstained.

In response to the European Parliament’s vote, the European Commission issued a statement welcoming the support and arguing that the EU member states must take the “necessary decisions” at the emergency Justice and Home Affairs council meeting scheduled for the 22nd of September.
