Latest polls suggest September’s elections will be very close

Up to nine political parties may make it in Parliament according to the survey carried out by GPO.

The general elections scheduled for 20 September are expected to be very close, as recent polls show New Democracy gaining a slim lead over SYRIZA for the first time, while up to nine parties may enter Parliament, illustrating the fragmentation and indecision amongst voters.

In the survey carried out by GPO for Mega Channel, when asked about which party they intend to vote for in September’s elections, the respondents answered the following:

SYRIZA – 25%
New Democracy – 25.3%
Popular Union – 4%
Golden Dawn – 5.5%
The River – 4.6%
KKE – 5.1%
Independent Greeks – 3%
PASOK – 5.3%
Union of Centrists – 3.2%
Undecided 12.8%

New Democracy’s provisional president of Evangelos Meimarakis has a higher approval rating (44.3%) than SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras (41.9%), followed by Stavros Theodorakis and Fofi Gennimata (both 39.7%). Next up are KKE’s Dimitris Koutsoumpas (28.2%), the Independent Greeks leader Panos Kammenos (25.2%), Popular Union president Panagiotis Lafazanis (23.4%) and the leader of Golden Dawn Nikos Michaloliakos (11.2%).

The respondents also appear to be split as to whether the SYRIZA-led government’s negotiation efforts had a positive (54.2%) or negative (45.2%) outcome.

In a survey carried out by Alco for the Newsit.gr website, SYRIZA remains in the lead, albeit with a 0.4% rate and 14% of respondents being undecided:

SYRIZA – 23%
New Democracy – 22.6%
Golden Dawn – 6.1%
The River – 4.4%
KKE – 5.5%
Independent Greeks – 2%
PASOK – 4.2%
Union of Centrists – 3.6%
Popular Union – 3.9%
Other party – 3.5%
White vote/abstain – 7.2%
Undecided – 14%

A survey carried out by Pulse for the Action 24 television network gives SYRIZA a 1% lead over New Demcoracy:

SYRIZA – 26%
New Democracy – 25%
Golden Dawn – 6%
PASOK/DIMAR – 5%
The River – 5%
KKE – 5%
Popular Union – 4%
Union of Centrists – 3%
Independent Greeks – 2.5%
Undecided – 10.5%
